“We’re everywhere! Eighty percent of your life is related to our services.” said proudly Yu Changlong, the alumni of School of Printing and Packaging, when talking about his job. He had studied abroad in the United States and worked there for 4 years. Now, he is playing an important role in the Color Services Department of the biggest art design company in New York, A.I. Friedman. He added “It’s the wally platform alma mater provides that makes me get the unexpected happiness and growth”
This is just an epitome of excellent talents of School of Printing and Packaging. It is recorded that in the recent 5 years students of School of Printing and Packaging have got the first prize of national Challenge Cup 6 times, 12 gold medals in industry competition, 30 approved patterns and 40 national undergraduate science research projects. Glasses-free 3D team was selected as one of the Xiaoping Scientific and Technical Innovation Team and was also the only one selected to accept the award in the Great Hall of the People.
Tri- innovation education is the Golden key of cultivating talents of School of Printing and Packaging. It opens the door for students to realize their dreams.
Creativities spark in class
Imaging that one day, you go shopping in a supermarket. The prices of goods will be presented in a screen when you pass a special door and you just need to pay for them with your bank card without waiting in line. At the same time, the markets and factories know what you need and send them to you. It saves time and money.
The invention of Bai Di named Future Supermarket Electronic Door of RFID’s expansion won the Creativity Scholarship of Avery Dennison Fund which includes 1300 dollars and a one-and-a-half-day’s study in the Asia-Pacific research center of Avery Dennison about how to improve creativity and leadership. Now, he has got master’s degree in Rochester Institute of Technology majoring in Packaging engineering and will study for doctor’s degree of Image-Science.
Bai Di’s idea stems from professor Wan Xiaoxia’s class. Professor Wan thinks it is very important to combine traditional and new media together and concentrate on technological innovation. The teachers of School of Printing and Packaging bring tri-innovation theory in class and inspire students to put ideas into practice giving a best answer to how to improve the skills, operating ability and innovation of students.
Under the enlightenment of associate professor Gao Zhiyong, a works developed by the team organized by undergraduate students of School of Printing and Packaging got the national first price of Amcorzs Design Competition, the national first price of Esko Packaging Design Star Competition and the second price of China Creative Packaging Design Contest.
The team members said “By taking part in packaging design competition, our creativities are activated and the aims of study are more specific.”
The “nutritious” Joint Training
In 2012, Italian Commerce Association subsidized by Italy government selected excellent printing talent globally. Yu Chan, a senior undergraduate of School of Printing and Packaging, stood out from others and got Italian Printing Award. She was invited to Italy to have a ten-day visit and study.
After she came home, she wondered the reasons why they could make such high-end printing machine but we couldn’t and why we Chinese should buy theirs rather than the opposite. Inspired by the gaps between China and other countries, Yu studied harder and harder. Finally, she got a chance to go to the United States for further study. “This is where my dream starts, and I want to realize a dream for her in the future” said Yu when she was asked to share her study experience.
Now, School of Printing and Packaging has a sound cooperation relationship with University of Wuppertal (Germany), Rochester Institute of Technology (the United States), Yonsei University (Korea), Chinese Culture University, Hong Kong Design Institute, The Hong Kong Printers Association, etc. Exchange Projects, “2+2” joint undergraduate training, “1+1+1” joint master training, “3+1+1” undergraduate and master training, etc. provide students in different developing directions with rich growth paths.
“One to One” Guiding
Many new students like Sun Jie felt confused when they stepped into university and wasted their time doing nothing. In the second semester of grade one, professor Qian Jun became the “candlelight guider” of Sun.
Sun mentioned wireless phone charging when talking to professor Qian. Professor Qian told him that green car would be the trend of car industry and it was preferable if wireless charging could be applied in electric car. After completing his creativity, Sun got Avery Dennison Innovation Scholarship for his works The Intelligent Self-service Wireless Charging System for Electric Car.
As one of the most outstanding candlelight guiders of Wuhan University, professor Qian thinks that it is more useful for students to do hands-on practice and learn from their experience than teachers’ precept. He encourages students to combine different subjects learned to do research.
The teacher group made up of entrepreneurs, outstanding alumni and managers is the popular second class to broaden outlook which connects the first class seamlessly. The practical experience of the teacher group brings the newest information to class and lays a solid foundation for students’ future work and research.
Tips of Happy Study
Li Xiang, a student of Printing Engineering grade 2011, got the national 8th prize in printing skill contest and was selected to join the national training of the 43rd International Skills Competition. To be prepared for the competition, he and his companies leaded by teacher Xu Hongping moved to ChuTian Printing Headquarters and Hubei XinHua Printing co., LTD.
Li said “Teacher Xu imparts specialized knowledge at the producing frontline from the theory of printing machines to operating and from the qualification of paper to the mixing of ink. He requires us to do our training with a high standard, which makes us learn more.” And Li got the admission to studying for master degree in School of Printing and Packaging because of his outstanding practical ability.
Besides emphasizing excavating industrial resource and promoting cultivating “tri-innovation” talents, teachers of School of Printing and Packaging have their special ways to make students study happily.
Wu Wei, “XiangJiang Scholar”, who established Printable Function Material and Electric Printing Lab, recruits amateurs from the junior students into his lab every year and gives them some subsidies to support their research and cultivate their research ability. “In the lab, teachers, doctors, masters and undergraduates help and learn from each other. I feel great power to do my research in such a happy and harmonious atmosphere.” said Xue Wenqing, a student of Grade 2012.
In recent years, School of Printing and Packaging was selected as Ministry of Education Outstanding Engineer Cultivating Project and Hubei Province Strategic Newly-developing Industry Talents Cultivating Project. Referring to the experience of education in developed countries, School of Printing and Packaging cooperates with Times Publishing Media co., LTD, Australia Amcor Limited Company and other company home and abroad to improve students’ practical skills and innovation.
“In the past, we thought different majors represent different future. But now, I think different futures are waiting for us to explore” Yu Changlong, alumnus of School of Printing and Packaging, said. On the way to cultivate talents, stories of School of Printing and Packaging are to be continued.
