On the afternoon of Nov. 15th, Chen Lingyun, a visiting professor and doctoral supervisor at University of Alberta in Canada, gave a lecture titled “The medical applications of self-healing gels” to all the freshmen. Prof. Li Houbin, director of the Packaging Engineering Research Office, presided over the meeting.

Chen Lingyun introduced Canada’s regional characteristics first and then introduced the topic of how to use natural materials to extract self-healing gels and apply them in medical field. She also illustrated the mechanism of action of self-healing gels. Experiments show that the properties of self-healing gel such as degradability, bio-affinity and injectability make it an ideal auxiliary medical healing material. She envisioned the future of applying self-healing materials to the packaging field, and accordingly stimulated students’ thoughts and expanded their horizons of learning.

In the question and answer session, Chen Lingyun answered students’ questions about the research and application of self-healing gels, further study abroad and so on.

It is reported that Chen Lingyun is a professor of Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Science of University of Alberta in Canada and she is mainly engaged in the research and development of functional food and biomaterials. She is currently a member of Presidium of the Association of Chinese Professors of North America and Bean Division of American Association of Cereal Chemists International (AACCI). She became the Canada Research Chair in 2014 and she won the second prize in the 2012 National Natural Science Award of the People’s Republic of China.
